WKC NATIONAL KELPIE FIELD TRIAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Roseworthy College, South Australia, 7th - 9th March 2008

The trial was conducted in extremely hot weather (above 40 C, 100+ F) and resulted in a fair number of dogs performing well below their usual ability - keen young dogs tended to be handicapped by their keenness and tended to overheat, whilst a number of very well performed older dogs found the conditions just too hot.

The sheep were good trial sheep who work well if not bumped or bustled. The majority of the dogs cast well and lifted and drew their sheep steadily and most had little trouble putting the sheep into the resting pen. The yard section was well designed and few encountered any problems. The outside work which followed was testing but here again if the dog controlled the sheep calmly they encounter few problems- most accomplished the gap with little loss of time- the trap was more challenging and required the dog to hold the sheep whilst the handler moved to the end to open the gate. The final pen was lost in many cases by sheer lack of time.

Roseworthy was an ideal venue - only marred by the weather. The trial was very well conducted by Convener Colin Meaney and his team. Congratulations to all concerned.
